Why I Now Love Study Hall

Last Friday, I was asked if I would be able to proctor a study hall. This is a task that I used to chafe against doing. I felt that I could better spend doing something else, not making sure that students stay quiet and focused on their work. This seemed like a laborious responsible that I tried my best to avoid.

However, since I have become immersed in the new technologies and tools, I have changed my mind about this task. I welcome the scheduled time needed to manage a quiet space. This period of time, 45 minutes three days and 1 hour for the fourth day, allows me time to reflect and catch up reading my aggregator, which includes my gmail, twitter, and favorite blog posts. This time allows me to correspond with friends around the world. If any time is left, it gives me the chance to create and edit blog posts within the confines of a busy school day.

So I eagerly look forward to the first day of school tomorrow and my first study hall. I look forward to being able to catch up in more depth to the EduCon that Chris Lehmann is organizing this fall and I will be able to have the time to organize my thoughts for my k12online conference presentation, whose deadline is fast approaching.

  1. hi, i was wandering if you thought that study hall was a good thing for schools to have as a class because my thought is that it would help to better students grades and help students turn in work on time.
